La Trompette - School of Music for Dalhousie University
B5 (Fifth Bachelor Level Term) / Design Tutor: Sarah Bonnemaison
Inspired by the trumpet, this school of music is a manifestation of the instrument's interior space. Users see light that pulls them into spaces; however, they seldomly see the source of this energy. The East side of the building, facing Robie Street, is the only facade that reveals a connection to the city through transparent glazing - as though standing on the edge of the trumpet's bell.
In plan, the building's geometric arrangement forces users to interact with one of three centre points (valves) when moving from space to space. The valves within the School of Music play various roles; they are the dominant surfaces from which light and sound reflects; they provide overall structural stability; and they enclose air tempering paths.
