The Wood Pallet FreeLab, in correspondence with the Arctic Adaptation Design Studio, is a pavilion studying glocal technologies. Inspired by the Inukshuk, a local technology to the Arctic, this structure plays the role of a way-finding instrument. The wood pallet is a material abundant in most northern communities, especially in regions that depend strictly on annually shipped goods. The pallets, usually burned or disposed of, may be up-cycled into construction material for temporary shelters with the addition of a few accessories. Iron angles, nuts and bolts, and wood planks connected all 200 wood pallets. The group was allotted 2 weeks and $3,000 to design and build a structure sensitive to northern Canadian culture.
Group members: Shawn Butler, Jonny Leger, Mikko Navarrete, Will Perkins
