The instant I opened the acceptance letter from Dalhousie University, I knew an adventure in the North was calling me for one of the two work terms as part of the Faculty of Architecture program. Despite the extreme cold of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, it was an experience of a lifetime where I witness a whole community being one with nature. Here, life is described as men versus nature, not men versus men as it often seem to be in the more populated, Southern regions. This culture is made evident by putting relationships first, work second, and money is simply never a factor in any connections established.
As a student intern in Nadji Architect's office, a small office of 3 people at the time, I was given the responsibility of polishing and completing a full set of construction drawings for a Long Term Care Facility, a design-build project sited in Betcho'ko. Due to the nature of a design-build project, close communication with the contractors was required in order to keep the drawings in sync with on-site construction decisions. FFE (Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment) teams were often contacted with a view to orchestrate interior design elements that kept in mind the possible limitations and needs of the users.
These drawings are the property of Nadji Architects Ltd. Downloading, copying, use, and/or sale of these documents without the permission of Nadji Architects Ltd. is prohibited.
A site visit to the Long Term Care Facility in Betcho'ko. Though construction was still in the bare skeleton phase, the discussion was mainly about finishes properties to determine various building material thicknesses that should be used for the most practical use of the space.
